Fiji Bati captain Api Koroisau is awaiting further clarity on a suspected broken jaw after leaving the field early in his team's Rugby League World Cup defeat to New Zealand.

The experienced hooker was injured in the eighth minute of Saturday's match at Cbus Super Stadium on the Gold Coast.

Koroisau suffered an accidental head clash with New Zealand forward Joseph Tapine and left the field for a head injury assessment.

He was subsequently taken to hospital for X-rays.

The injury was one of several setbacks for Fiji during their 78–0 defeat.

Winger Semi Valemei was ruled out after a Category 1 head knock, while Ronald Philitoga was unable to continue after a high tackle from New Zealand's Ronaldo Mulitalo.

Fiji had entered the match hoping to secure a semi-final place after pushing Australia in a 36–22 defeat the previous weekend.

Instead, their campaign ended with a heavy loss and concerns over several players' recovery.

Koroisau was one of Fiji's leaders throughout the tournament alongside Viliame Kikau.

The immediate priority is establishing the extent of his injury and whether further treatment will be required.

As of the latest official NRL injury update, a broken jaw remains suspected rather than confirmed. No recovery timetable has been announced.
