New Zealand's preparations for the Rugby League World Cup semi-final against Tonga have taken another turn, with 22-year-old Warriors forward Jacob Laban ruled out of the tournament.

New Zealand Rugby League confirmed that scans identified a lower-leg injury after Laban missed training last week. Coach Stacey Jones now has an unexpected change to manage before the Kiwis meet Tonga in Newcastle.

His replacement is Phoenix Crossland, whose four-match suspension has been served. Crossland missed Newcastle's NRL Grand Final and New Zealand's three World Cup pool matches. His return gives the Kiwis an experienced option at hooker who can also cover other positions.

He has represented New Zealand six times since 2024, including the 2025 Pacific Championships final victory over Toa Samoa.

New Zealand has lost a promising forward but regained a player familiar with high-pressure football. The next question is whether Jones uses Crossland immediately or retains the combinations that helped the Kiwis reach the final four.

New Zealand face Tonga at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday, 7 November.
