Fiji’s constitutional reform process has been delayed after Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced that a parliamentary committee would present its review at a later sitting.

RNZ Pacific reports that Rabuka made the announcement in Parliament on Monday, changing the timetable for the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026.

The move followed public pressure over the proposed reforms. Rabuka had previously indicated that the bill would be brought forward this week.

No replacement date was announced for the Special Parliamentary Committee’s report.

The delay also leaves the relationship between constitutional reform and the election timetable in focus. Rabuka had earlier told RNZ Pacific that the parallel reform process was a reason he had not announced an election date.

The next confirmed parliamentary timetable will be the development to watch. At this stage, the postponement does not establish that the bill has been withdrawn or that its proposals have been abandoned.

This report is based on RNZ Pacific’s account of the parliamentary announcement.
